The season-opener in Australia is right around the corner, as all teams gear up for the massive challenge under the new regulations. The first race weekend could turn into a disappointment for many teams, as the regulations are believed to be overly complex. Oscar Piastri issues a warning to McLaren, as they hope to start the season on the best possible note.
Ahead of the beginning of the 2026 season, Zak Brown had laid out his wishes to witness an Australian GP run under the floodlights. The Briton wanted to see the race moved to nighttime, so the fans and drivers could witness the lovely Australian sunset while racing on track. However, the local hero, Oscar Piastri, doesn’t really want this to happen and speaks against the motion on the status quo.
Oscar Piastri insisted that the current race timings were good the way they were. He accepted that it was better if the race were under sunny weather, with manageable temperatures for the drivers. However, he was sure that the racing venue did not need to run during nighttime, with bright lights shining all through the circuit.
Further, Oscar Piastri highlighted that there were enough races that were run at night because of the extreme temperatures during the daytime in those destinations. As drivers, Piastri reckoned that daytime racing was better because they could also see the fans clearly cheering on from the grandstands. The Aussie revealed that many grandstands at night were very dark and not clearly visible, thus ruining a major part of the experience.
I think it is nice the way it is. It is obviously better when it is sunny, but I don’t think it needs to be under lights. We’ve got a lot of races now that are night races, I think certainly for us as drivers, often the atmosphere is actually better during the day because you can see the fans a lot more, a lot of the grandstands at some night races can be quite dark.

Oscar Piastri recalls ‘painful’ ending to the 2025 season
Oscar Piastri lost the driver’s title in the 2025 season despite leading in the pecking order for a majority of the season. The Aussie lost out on multiple opportunities, partly because of McLaren’s chaotic team orders. Now, Piastri recalls the painful end to the previous season and how he aims not to go through it again, to finally lift his maiden title win in 2026.

Speaking on being known as the ‘nice guy’ in the paddock, Oscar Piastri assured that he wasn’t here for that. He insisted that he was in Formula 1 to become a world champion. Piastri highlighted that he remained proud of how he handled the entire situation, but it was still painful for him. Now, the 24-year-old hopes to start the season on the right foot, right at his home soil in Australia.
Obviously, I’m not here just to be known as a nice person or someone who goes about things in a way that people think is good. I’m here to try and become an F1 world champion. I’m very proud of the way I’ve gone about things. There are a lot of lessons from last year, and yes, the ending was a bit painful, which you can treat in one of two ways. For me, the amount of support I’ve gained over the last 12 months, especially in Australia, it’s going to be very nice to be back racing at home.
Oscar Piastri said, as reported by RacingNews365.
The 2026 season could be the year of redemption for Oscar Piastri. He is certainly capable of breaking a lot of records in Formula 1. For now, Piastri will have to manage expectations as all teams will start from zero and will have to develop from the ground up.
