Oscar Piastri has performed impressively since the beginning of the 2024 season. The Australian has already scored a race win in his second year in the pinnacle of motorsport. The 23-year-old attempted his level best to overcome Charles Leclerc at the Italian GP to win the race. However, Piastri failed to do so and succumbed to a runner-up finish.

Charles Leclerc put forth a sublime drive at the Italian GP to emerge victorious after dragging the hard tires over 38 laps around Monza. Oscar Piastri couldn’t catch up to Leclerc who was slower on the racing line. Hence, Piastri noted he was extremely hurt from the ordeal. Additionally, the Aussie claimed he did everything right with the strategy.

It hurts. I'm not going to lie, it hurts a lot. I did everything right.
Oscar Piastri said during the post-race interview, as reported by Formule1.nl

In addition, Piastri mentioned that he had a lot of questions about the strategies he stuck to in the race. According to the 23-year-old, committing to a one-stop strategy was risky for McLaren as well as Ferrari. Regardless, Leclerc drove exceptionally well as the Australian noted that everything was right in the end for the Italian constructor.

Oscar Piastri accepts McLaren was ‘wrong’ with strategy at Italian GP

McLaren decided to stick to the conventional strategy at the Italian GP, which didn’t fetch them great results. Hence, Oscar Piastri noted that Woking could’ve gone for a one-stopper too like Ferrari. The 23-year-old further mentioned that Leclerc took the right gamble and it was painful.

Maybe in hindsight, but everyone always knows everything better after the race. Today we were just wrong. We could lose everything, of course, because we left from the first row. Charles Leclerc, On the other hand, could try something else. He took the right gamble. It was painful.

McLaren’s dominant pace has still enabled the team to close in on Red Bull in the constructors’ championship. The Italian GP loss was a disappointing situation for the team. Regardless, Woking scored great points over the weekend and will look forward to winning at the upcoming Azerbaijan GP.
