Red Bull’s performance slump in the 2024 season has caused the departure of multiple key figures from the team. Milton Keynes took the massive hit of losing the aero-genius Adrian Newey followed by Jonathan Wheatley. In addition to this, the head of race strategy Will Courtenay has decided to leave the constructor.
Will Courtenay has worked with Red Bull since their Jaguar days and has been working as the race strategist since 2010. Moreover, Courtenay has left Milton Keynes and joined their current rival McLaren for the coming years. Neither the strategist nor the Austrian constructor have commented on the shocking move of the engineer.
However, Courtenay will continue to work with Red Bull under the ground-effect regulation era. The strategist is supposed to join McLaren mid-2026 season as he still has his contract pending. Regardless, the Briton will take great knowledge of the Milton Keynes-based constructor with him while entering the doors of Woking.
Andrea Stella labeled Will Courtenay as the ‘ideal candidate’ to lead McLaren’s sporting function
Red Bull’s downfall in the 2024 season including Christian Horner‘s sexual assault investigation saga were the major reasons behind this occurrence. Andrea Stella on the other hand is extremely delighted with this acquisition. Stella noted that Will Courtenay was an ideal candidate for the team and role due to his experience, professionalism, and passion.
Will’s experience, professionalism and passion for motorsport make him the ideal candidate to lead our sporting function.Andrea Stella said, as reported by BBC.com
Red Bull had already undergone a massive reorganization this month following the departure of Newey and Wheatley. Hence, the team must work desperately on their form to retain crucial people like Will Courtenay. Regardless, Red Bull’s current focus lies on improving on the 2024 season performance.
