Alpine has had an abysmal start to their 2024 Formula 1 season. The Enstone-based team is tied on zero points in the constructors championship with Sauber and Willaims. Moreover, among all the teams, Alpine seems to have the least performance in their car.
Following their successful season in 2022 wherein they finished P4 in the constructor’s championship, there was heavy investment in the team by celebrities like Ryan Reynolds, and Anthony Joshua. But even after the investment, Alpine seems to lack in terms of car development and performance.
Alpine has been on a downward trend ever since the end of the 2022 F1 season. Besides the performance, the internal issues at Alpine have also played a massive part in the team’s descent from grace. With CEO Laurent Rossi, Ex-Team Principle Otmar Szafnauer, and many other key figures leaving the French manufacturers, the team seems to be at its lowest. As per Motorsport, this has led to rumors surrounding the team’s possible sale.
The rumors were raised during the Japanese Grand Prix, where Alpine drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly finished P15 and P16. It’s believed that there’s a catch for anyone interested in a takeover of the French team. The information that was gathered from inside the Suzuka paddock states that any company willing to take over Alpine has to use the Renault power unit for multiple years, at least till 2029.
Pierre Gasly shares insight into floor damage that ruined his Japanese GP
Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon had a slight shunt with each other during the restart after the lap 1 incident in Japan between Daniel Ricciardo and Alex Albon. The pair got damage on their cars after the contact and essentially ruined each other’s races.
Following this, Gasly spoke about the entire incident during his post-race interview. Moreover, the French driver added how he got contact as he was sandwiched between Yuki Tsunoda and his teammate.
The second start was very good, I managed to pass Esteban and go alongside Yuki [Tsunoda], and then unfortunately I got sandwiched, with Yuki turning left and Esteban turning right. He touched me and took the whole left side of my floor off the car.
Pierre Gasly said in an interview with Motorsport
The number 10 also added how the floor damage led to a loss of 40 downforce points. This hampered his 53-lap Grand Prix outing even more. Overall, Alpine and its drivers seem to be in a horrific poison right now. Only time will tell if the Enstone-based team can bounce back this season.
