All eyes were set on the local hero, Gabriel Bortoleto, as he made his maiden appearance with Sauber on his home soil. The rookie has been performing well so far in the 2025 season and has gained some crucial points for the team. However, the start to the Brazilian GP turned out to be a nightmare for Bortoleto as he was involved in a massive wreck during the sprint race. Thankfully, the 21-year-old was not heavily injured from the crash.

Gabriel Bortoleto has surely emerged as one of the better rookies this year after he clinched a points finish for Sauber on multiple occasions. Despite racing in a comparatively inferior chassis to the rivals, he has achieved 19 points this year so far. Now, Bortoleto’s chances to excel in the Brazil GP sprint race were very slim, especially because of his P14 start to the race.

During the sprint race, Gabriel Bortoleto did the best he could and was gaining a few positions. He also steered clear of multiple wrecks in the early stages of the sprint race. However, towards the end of the race, Bortoleto committed to a daring move and crashed brutally into the barriers. The Sauber challenger took the brunt of the accident, but the driver was thankfully unhurt.

Heading into Turn 1 during the final lap of the race, Bortoleto lost control of the car and spun out, being sent barreling into the barriers. The rookie thankfully walked out unscathed in the aftermath of the crash and was rushed to the medical center. The Sauber mechanics will have to work overtime to fix both the Sauber challengers, especially after even Nico Hulkenberg crashed the car into the barriers at around Lap 7 of the race.

Gabriel Bortoleto might not be able to participate in the Brazil GP Qualifying

Following the new sprint format, the Qualifying will take place a couple of hours after the Sprint race. This means that Sauber mechanics would have to fix the car before the culmination of the Q1 session of the Qualifying. Keeping in mind the massive damage to Gabriel Bortoleto’s car, he might not be able to make it in time for the session. The Brazilian would have to start the race from the last position, or even the pit lane if his car isn’t fixed in time for the main race.

The mechanics swiftly took the car into the garage and started inspecting it. The modern-day F1 cars are so safe that they can endure such massive crashes with minimal injuries to the drivers. As such, everyone is glad for the extreme safety measures in the car, especially the Halo, which adds a lot to the overall structural integrity of the chassis. But, because of the intense damage, Gabriel Bortoleto’s weekend at home might end on a disappointing note.

Gabriel Bortoleto has still won the hearts of the Brazilian fans and other fans around the globe following his impressive performances in his rookie year. The 21-year-old will also stay with the team during its transition to Audi, as it will also develop its own power units under the new regulations of the 2026 season. As such, it will be exciting to witness how Bortoleto performs in his sophomore year, especially with a refreshed team on the F1 grid. For now, his focus will be on ending the Brazilian race on the best possible note.
