McLaren driver’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured possible podiums and wins over the last few races, which have helped them massively in closing the gap in Constructors championship. Table leaders Red Bull failed to maintain the consistent performance they showed at the beginning of the season, with Sergio Perez’s performance slump. The Mexican will be a key factor in the gap between McLaren and Red Bull narrowing.
In a recent interview, McLaren CEO Zak Brown admitted that Sergio Perez’s performance in upcoming races will decide McLaren’s Constructors’ title. Brown believed that the competition with Red Bull would last until the final race in Abu Dhabi. He highlighted that it will be a challenging fight, as the two cars are very close in performance. The outcome of the constructor’s championship will be decided by just a small difference between the two teams.
It will be tough. I think it will come down to the last race. There is not much between the two cars.Zak Brown told on BBC.com.
Brown emphasized that the result of the championship will largely depend on how Perez of Red Bull performs. He reckoned, of Checo competes at his best the fight for the title will be very close. However, if Perez keeps performing at the level he has this year, McLaren has a strong chance of winning. This is because the oranges have two drivers who consistently finish at the front of the races, giving them a competitive edge.
It will be a question of how Perez performs: if he can perform as he is capable of, it will be a tough fight. If he continues to perform as he has this year, we have a good chance, because we have two drivers who are consistently at the front.Zak Brown added
Zak Brown calls it disingenuous to claims surprise at McLaren closing the gap to Red Bull
Zak Brown highlighted that it would be dishonest if he claimed that he wasn’t surprised by McLaren’s improvements. He mentioned Red Bull had a big advantage over other teams, and Mercedes was also very strong.
Brown felt that McLaren would gradually close the gap, but he didn’t expect to be so close to taking the lead in the championship just before the summer break. McLaren being just one race away from the lead in the championship was more than he anticipated.
If I were to sit here and say I'm not surprised, that would be disingenuous. Red Bull had such an advantage over everyone and Mercedes has been so dominant. I felt like we'd continue to close the gap. Did I think we would be here at the summer break, one race away from getting the lead?Zak Brown stated.
Certainly, Zak Brown claimed he didn’t expect the team to reach this level of dominance and gave a tough battle to Red Bull. But eventually they did and now they’re just one race away from getting the lead. Fans hope they start strongly in the second half of the season and not let the lead slip away after achieving it
