McLaren has risen up as the most dominant team on the grid mid-way through the 2024 season. Woking is coming extremely close to ousting Red Bull from the top spot in the constructors’ championship. Hence, after the upturn in performance, Zak Brown has taken a dig at other constructors who are dependent on sponsors, unlike McLaren.
Zak Brown recalled the inception of McLaren and his leadership role in the team. Brown reckoned that his dreams from day one were to keep Woking as independent of sponsors. Hence, the team’s partners showcased that the CEO was indeed true and they didn’t need to depend on title sponsors. There were multiple reasons for this.
From day one, I wanted us not to be dependent on a sponsor. If you look at our partners, we aren’t either
Zak Brown told Motorsport-Magazin.
Subsequently, Brown took an indirect hit at those constructors who decided to stick to a sponsor throughout the season. The Briton noted that depending on sponsors was ‘dangerous’. The reason for this was that if the sponsor decides to leave mid-season then there would be a big gap to fill in the team.
If you have a title sponsor, like some teams, then that’s dangerous. Because if that sponsor leaves you, you have a big gap to fill.Zak Brown added
Zak Brown revealed the condition that would ‘open up’ McLaren to such sponsors
Zak Brown was proud of the route followed by McLaren in the pinnacle of motorsport. The McLaren CEO noted that the ‘right brand’ and the right sponsorship could make the team consider locking in with a sponsor. Subsequently, the 52-year-old claimed that Woking needed to stay grounded and stay humble due to the base of the team.
I like the approach we have taken, It would have to be the right brand and the right partnership, then we would be open to something like that. We have to stay grounded because we know where we came from. We earned it the hard way and I think that was a good thing.Zak Brown noted
McLaren’s 2024 campaign would help them set up extremely well for the remainder of the ground-effect era. Hence, Woking will have to continue to maintain the lead in the development war to fend off against the rivals. The competition has continued to peak in excitement and competition, especially at the forefront.
