The iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans is this weekend. This historic race is the pinnacle of endurance racing with some of the world’s best drivers and teams. However, McLaren has been away from Le Mans for many years now. Nevertheless, McLaren CEO Zak Brown opened up about a possible return to this prestigious race.

The Woking-based team has not competed for overall victory at Le Mans for a couple of decades. The Hypercar category of the championship has witnessed the arrival of Lamborghini, Peugeot, Ferrari, Porsche and more. As such, many wondered if this could entice Zak Brown to bring his team back to the race.

Brown claimed that a question was not if McLaren would compete in the Hypercar class in the future. Rather, the American reckoned that it was a matter of when the Woking-based team decides to return to the iconic race in the premiere class. Currently, the British team has three cars in the LMGT3 category.

Ex-F1 driver Mick Schumacher claims he ‘never followed’ Le Mans as a kid

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the biggest event in the world of endurance racing. However, this historic race does not have the same level of appeal as Formula 1. As the pinnacle of motorsport has a wider reach globally. Recently, former F1 driver Mick Schumacher admitted that he was not a fan of Le Mans during his childhood.

The German driver is competing in the World Endurance Championship this season with Alpine. However, Schumacher claimed that he used to be fully focused on Formula 1 as a kid and never really got interested in following Le Mans or endurance racing in general. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old was impressed by the passion of the teams and drivers at this historic event.

I never followed Le Mans as a child or teenager. I was always completely focused on Formula 1. But I see the passion of the teams and fans here, which really impresses me.

Certainly, Le Mans has gained popularity in recent years. WEC hopes to further reach new audiences after the arrival of several manufacturers to its premiere class. The 2024 iteration of the iconic race would undoubtedly be one of the most thrilling contests in the event’s recent history.
