Italian tennis star Fabio Fognini has answered the million-dollar question in today’s tennis world: Who is the best among the Big 3 (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic)? The Italian, who has faced all three on the court, has also experienced his fair share of defeats against them.

Fognini picked Federer as his choice among the trio. The former World No. 9 mentioned that the Swiss Maestro would likely be the choice of 95% of the tennis fraternity today.

I never won against Nole and Roger. We are talking about three myths, even if they are different. In sporting terms and as a tennis fan, I am a pro-Federer. Without disrespecting the other two, I think that if you ask 95% of people, they will say Roger Federer. It was a pleasure to watch him play. Djokovic, on the other hand, if he was doing well, he would take away your time and not let you play. Rafa, what can I say about him… He would destroy you physically and psychologically.

Fabio Fognini said on Relevo

Fognini faced the Big 3 a total of 30 times. He had a 0-4 record against Federer and a 0-8 record against Djokovic. However, he found some success against Nadal, with a 4-14 record against the Spaniard.

Two of his most notable wins against Nadal came at the 2015 US Open and the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. At the US Open, Fognini staged an incredible comeback from two sets down to beat Nadal under the lights. Four years later, he defeated the 11-time Monte Carlo champion en route to winning his first and only Masters 1000 title at the Monte Carlo Country Club.

Rafael Nadal to be honored by University of Salamanca

The Governing Council of the University of Salamanca will discuss awarding the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Rafael Nadal in its session on Wednesday, December 18. University sources have indicated that the proposal is “very likely” to receive approval.

The proposal recognizes Nadal’s incredible achievements in tennis, including 92 ATP titles, 22 Grand Slam victories, two Olympic gold medals, and five Davis Cup wins. It also highlights his past honors, such as the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 2008 and multiple National Sports Awards.

In addition to his athletic success, the University praises Nadal’s values, humility, and simplicity. These qualities have led the Governing Council to propose him for the institution’s highest honorary title.

If approved, the proposal will move to the Cloister of Doctors in January 2025. Nadal, who officially retired from tennis in the Davis Cup last month, will receive this recognition at a formal ceremony at the University’s Paraninfo later in the year.
