My disqualification at Barcelona is an ‘Enormous mistake’: Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini has not been in the best of forms since reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open 2021. In the three tournaments that followed, the Mexican Open , the Miami Open, and the Andalucia Open, the thirty-three year old Italian failed to make a mark.

But, at the Miami Open, he seemed to have found his mojo. Fognini reached the Quarter finals of the event without dropping a set along the way. At the Quarters he was met by Casper Ruud who beat him in straight sets 6-4 6-3. Following the decent showing at Monte Carlo, Fognini moved on to the clay courts of Barcelona.

Fognini started by saying that the match referee said i abused him in English, but I speak only Spanish here. Fognini added that everyone in his inner circle, his wife, people he trains with all know that he doesn’t swear. He reiterated that if the ATP doesn’t come with an apology, he will seek compensation from the ATP for serious image damage

Fognini said. “The judge claims I insulted him in English. But when? I spoke Spanish, as I usually do,” He continued, “In the circle where I have been training for ten years, where everyone knows me. Even [wife] Flavia Pennetta], who knows I didn’t insult anyone, was appalled. I’m not angry, I’m disappointed.

Fognini concluded by saying, “I want an apology for the enormous mistake, if my appeal is rejected I will put everything in the hands of the lawyer and ask the ATP for compensation for very serious image damage.
