- Broadcasters faced backlash for using fake crowd noise during PSL 2026 matches held without fans.
- The season opener featured two new franchises and a player auction, marking a significant change for the league.
- Criticism arose over inconsistent policies allowing select VIPs into empty stadiums, contradicting the closed-door mandate.
The 2026 Pakistan Super League season opener was chaotic. Since PSL 2026 is being held without spectators, the decision by broadcasters to include ‘fake’ crowd noise during the match has drawn significant criticism against the league’s organizers.
PSL 2026 was set to be a historic season for franchise cricket in Pakistan, with the league’s expansion from six to eight teams.
Two new franchises have been introduced, Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindi Pindiz, with an aim of matching the scale and commercial reach of the IPL. Furthermore, PSL 2026 was the first season to have a player auction, moving away from the previously used player drafting system.
However, PSL was dealt an early blow after Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi announced that the matches would be played behind closed doors, in empty stadiums. The decision was taken in light of the ongoing fuel crisis that has erupted due to the West Asia conflict, with authorities directing citizens to restrict movement. Additionally, Naqvi confirmed that the 2026 PSL matches would be restricted to only two venues, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and Karachi’s National Bank Stadium.
As the tournament kicked off without much fanfare at the Gaddafi Stadium, fans were quick to notice an anomaly. During the season opener between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen, broadcasters strangely piped in crowd cheers and chants through the audio feed. In order to fill the ‘silence’, PCB and the broadcasters added ‘artificial’ noise, a move that has now become a flashpoint for criticism.
It's clearly visible that there's no one in the crowd. But was it necessary to put this annoying crowd noise effect in the background??

They need to fix this. This is so shameful. 😭pic.twitter.com/UNbGiMsh6U
Fans ridiculed the contrast between the silent Gaddafi Stadium and the loud audio that was played on a loop throughout the game. At times, the commentators’ voices were muffled. Moreover, the PSL organizers were slammed for the audio-video lag as well, where the artificial ‘cheer’ would often trigger at the wrong time, leading to subpar broadcast quality. Separately, the match balls came under scrutiny for turning pink because the color from the Hyderabad players’ jerseys was rubbing off.
During today’s PSL match, the ball turned pink as early as the second over because players kept rubbing it on their pants, causing the dye to transfer onto the ball.

The Pakistan Super League opener was deemed a disaster for the PCB, as supporters voiced anger over the board’s inconsistent policy of allowing a select few VIPs and guests into the stadium. They suggested that it contradicted the closed-door mandate advised by the government.
Fakhar Zaman shines as Lahore Qalandars begin PSL title defense with a win over Hyderabad Kingsmen
Defending champions Lahore Qalandars begin their quest for a fourth PSL title after kick-starting their 2026 campaign with a 69-run win. The Qalandars won against the new Hyderabad Kingsmen side, with the match taking place in a subdued atmosphere at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Opting to bat first, the home side got off to a great start, thanks to an 84-run opening stand between Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Naeem. The latter scored 53 runs off 39 balls, hitting ten fours. Late contributions from wicket-keeper Haseebullah Khan (40 off 28), Sikandar Raza (24 off 10) and captain Shaheen Afridi (12 off 2) saw Lahore Qalandars finish with a massive 199-run score on the board.
Hyderabad Kingsmen could not put up a challenge, with wickets falling from the very start. A 25-run opening stand between Saim Ayub and Usman Khan came to an end after Shaheen Afridi picked up Lahore’s first wicket. Skipper Marnus Labuschagne top-scored with 26 runs, while his side was bowled out for a mere 130. For Lahore, Ubaid Shah, Sikander Raza, and Haris Rauf picked up two wickets each.
The defending champions start their PSL campaign with a thumping win 👊
