During Game 1 of the World Series, fan interference caused quite a stir during the game between New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium. In the ninth inning, pinstripes baseman Gleyber Torres sent the ball straight into left field which many thought would be a home run, but instead got caught by a fan.

The fan appeared to dive over the walls to catch the ball and was called for interference. Even after rechecking the video, it was declared that the umpires made the right call about fan interference.

It made many recall the 1996 incident when a 12-year-old Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier caught the ball blasted by Derek Jeter in what was called a home run. The incident took place during the ALCS game between NY Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles.

Flashbacks of Jeffrey Maier incident in World Series Game 1

Seems like Jeffrey Maier’s incident is still haunting the NY Yankees, as they got a call back to the 28-year-old 1996 incident. While the Yankees won the series 4-1 back then, in 2024 the team lost 6-3 against LA Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series.

While Game 1 started with the Yankees lead, it did not go as planned due to a couple of mistakes. The defensive did not look good as they allowed runs to hand over the opponents a lead.

However, lucky for the Dodgers that their baseman Freddie Freeman’s grand slam in the 10th inning boosted the team to victory. It’ll be a best-of-seven-series game and seeing how Game 1 unfolded, it seems there’ll be more drama unfolding in the upcoming days.
