Novak Djokovic was not in his best firm heading into the French Open, but even his physical condition seemed to have worsened throughout the tournament as he was seen wincing in pain in his last two matches.

In the third-round match against Lorenzo Musetti, he was forced to play a full five sets that went on past 3 am. Post this, he was photographed having a plaster on his knee, indicating that the four-plus hour match had indeed taken a toll on the Serb.

It was also noticeable in his fourth-round match against Francisco Cerundolo as he was constantly holding his knee and looked uncomfortable throughout the match, despite making an impossible comeback and winning the match in the fifth set.

Today, he announced that he would be withdrawing from the tournament due to the knee injury and fans were quick to blame the Roland Garros’ organization for his condition.

The netizens reasoned that it was unacceptable that he had to play past 3 am and be ready to play again the next day. It was also noticed that the organizers refused to have the courts made between sets despite Djokovic complaining that the conditions were slippery and dangerous.

Novak Djokovic has relinquished his title of ‘World No.1’ by withdrawing from the French Open

Before the French Open began, it was known that Jannik Sinner had an amazing opportunity to overtake Djokovic in the rankings to sit on top of the world. However, these chances seemed to decrease slightly when Djokovic announced that he would be playing an ATP 250 event in Geneva, which would give him some additional ranking points.

After that tournament, Sinner had to reach the same round as Djokovic, or better, to hold the title of the best player in the world for the first time in his career. Djokovic’s withdrawal from the French Open today met this condition and the ATP Tour announced that Sinner will officially be the World No.1 after the rankings are updated this week.

At just 22, he became the first Italian man to ever accomplish this feat.
