Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont and former player Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic was unceremoniously traded away to the Los Angeles Lakers after the Dallas Mavericks ownership headed by Patrick Dumont felt they could not win an NBA title with him. In return, they brought in Anthony Davis, who they believe can help take that next step soon.
GM Nico Harrison mentioned that it was his decision all throughout the process after speaking with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka over the past few weeks. In the aftermath, Mavericks fans are demanding the team fire Harrison.
However, a move of such magnitude would not come about unless the Mavericks ownership had given their blessings. Luka Doncic has been an All-NBA 1st teamer for the past five seasons and was the franchise cornerstone.
If it was former majority owner Mark Cuban, such a trade wouldn’t even be discussed. But since he is a minority owner now after selling most of his stake to Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family, he had no say. Dumont however did say something about their decision to trade Doncic.
If you look at the greats in the league, the people you and I grew up with, Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Shaq, they worked really hard, every day, with a singular focus to win. And if you don’t have that, it doesn’t work. And if you don’t have that, you shouldn’t be part of the Dallas Mavericks.
Patrick Dumont said
The son in law of the $32.3 billion Adelson family said this to the Dallas Morning News after reporter Brad Townsend asked him about the trade. Dumont’s words indicate he did not think that Luka Doncic had the drive and motivation to win. Which is why they sent him to the Lakers.
Fans have a problem with Patrick Dumont’s words about Luka Doncic
Patrick Dumont’s quotes in the Dallas Morning News left basketball fans dumbfounded. They could not believe that a person who married into the Adelson family, then became the owner of the Dallas Mavericks after his mother-in-law paid for it, had the nerve to say all this.
Fans do not feel he is even qualified to talk about what makes a great player. Since he rose the ranks of the Adelson family due to his marriage, he wouldn’t know anything about winning. Fans took their anger out on social media leaving comments thrashing the near 50-year-old.

Patrick Dumont married into the family that ran the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. They made him CFO in 2016 and COO in 2021. In that time, the company's market cap has decreased by 7 billion dollars. So if anyone understands hard work, it's a nepo-in-law who sucks at his job https://t.co/crQBvR3XNY

Married into the Adelson family and all of a sudden thinks he can lecture pro athletes on how to compete. I'm ready to see Luka roll the Mavs in the playoffs and I'm from Texas…

Luka Doncic played through a bloody knee and countless injuries to drag the Dallas Mavericks to the Finals.

Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont is a complete basketball know-nothing who traded away Dallas’ 25-year-old franchise player because of his obsession with “culture”.
Stupid.

That fucker married into the wealth bough Mavs with the help of his mother-in-law and destroyed the future of the Mavericks in 1 year.
And he has the audacity to say stuff like that after everything Luka did for the… pic.twitter.com/cbbDRhTow4
Using Shaq's work ethic — a player who admittedly didn't work out during the offseason — to justify the trade of a 25-year-old scoring champion entering his prime is objectively hilarious. https://t.co/7tQwK93mpQ

Smear campaign on a top 3-4 player that carried you is nasty https://t.co/av3wIl6SKL

Anthony Davis, the player they traded for is now out injured. After he comes back, if he manages to make the Dallas Mavericks a title winning team, Patrick Dumont’s logic will be justified. Until then, it is likely that fans will keep targeting the team’s majority owner for his baseless takes.
