Pete Carroll stuck by Geno Smith despite a string of poor performances since taking over as the starting quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders. Smith won just 2 games in his first six starts and led the league with 10 interceptions.
In week seven, the Raiders traveled to Arrowhead Stadium to face off against divisional rivals the Kansas City Chiefs. The silver and black had zero momentum going into the game despite winning their last fixture against the Tennessee Titans. To make matters worse, players including Jakobi Meyers, Kolton Miller, and Brock Bowers stayed back in Vegas due to various reasons.
On the other hand, the Chiefs welcomed back their ace wide receiver Rashee Rice to the team. Patrick Mahomes, who was 12-2 against the Raiders prior to Sunday’s fixture, fed Rice two touchdown passes while connecting with Hollywood Brown for a third.
In reply, Smith and the Raiders had just one first-down completion and a little over 40 combined yards in the first half. Meanwhile, the Chiefs punched in 400 yards at the break.
Smith’s second first-down completion came in the third quarter, but by that time, the Chiefs had increased their lead to 31. Running back Isiah Pacheco scrambled for the game’s only rushing score, and kicker Harrison Butker converted from 38 yards to two and a half minutes before the end of the third quarter.
Carroll had finally seen enough. He replaced Smith with Kenny Pickett for the rest of the game. Smith finished week seven with 10 completions from 16 attempts for 67 yards.
Pickett’s first contribution as a Raider was fumbling the snap. His teammates managed to recover the ball, but it was a sign of things to come.
Mahomes also went off to make way for ex-Raider Gardner Minshew, who took a knee before the 2-minute warning in the final quarter. The game ended in a shutout win for the Chiefs.
Smith was headed back to the locker room when an energetic fan shouted, “Kenny Pickett’ at him.

Geno Smith breaks his silence after a humiliating defeat against the Chiefs
The Raiders fans were excited when Tom Brady took over as a minority owner of the team. He played a big part in appointing John Spytek as general manager and hiring the previously retired Carroll.

Spytek settled on trading for Smith from the Seattle Seahawks and reunited him with Carroll. It seemed like a win-win situation at that time, but losses piled up in spades.
Smith averaged 181.57 yards per game (which is worse than injured Lamar Jackson and second-year Saints QB Spencer Rattler).
The Pete Carroll regime has been worse than Josh McDaniels – it's a FACT

The Raiders were predicted to lose by 12.5 points on Sunday, but the margin turned out to be far worse in KC. 31 unanswered points were devastating enough; they had just 70 yards of passing despite switching from Smith to Pickett.
Talking ain’t going to get it done. It’s going to be on Sunday, or whenever we play, go out there with bad intentions and get it done. … Everybody in the locker needs to look within themself and then as a unit, we’ve got to come together and continue to come together… Tough losses like this should be a gut check, and it should make you lock in more with your teammates.
Geno Smith said (H/T: Raiders official transcript)
The Chiefs out-gained the Raiders 434-95, in first-downs 30-3, and in time of possession by nearly 25 minutes. And while KC went 9-of-15 on third downs, Las Vegas was 0 of 7 tries.
It was the Raiders’ first shutout since Week 14 of 2023, when they lost 3-0 to the Minnesota Vikings. But even in that low-scoring game, the Raiders had 171 yards through the air.
There are still plenty of games to turn the season around and the year on a high note. Up next, the Raiders host the Jacksonville Jaguars, who lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the earlier kickoff.
