He was also not ready to accept chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani‘s decision when he was playing his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor. Zverev narrowly escaped defeat, but during the match, the ball had bounced twice before Zverev hit it. Lahyani tried explaining the same to Zverev, but the latter rather launched into an angry tirade about how the umpires had been ruining his chances of winning trophies.

Why bother playing 89 matches this year… it’s not possible, not possible. Every Grand Slam final I lose is your fault, because of your mistakes. I’m here, working like an animal, but you make a multitude of mistakes. You decide the matches, you decide the outcome of tournaments every week. Why do I do this? For what reason?

Although David Goffin won this match, Zverev still edges him 4-3 in their head-to-head meetings. After upsetting Zverev with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5, the 33-year-old Goffin advanced to his first quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event since 2021.

Goffin also became the fourth-lowest-ranked quarterfinalist in the history of the tournament. He is currently World No. 66. Goffin will next play 7th-ranked Taylor Fritz who stormed past Holger Rune in the fourth round. Goffin will meet the American for the third time, and they have won a match in each of their previous meetings.
