The Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav era has started with a bang in T20Is. India secured a 3-0 whitewash in the series against Sri Lanka. Team India won the first two matches dominantly. However, in the final game, they had to fight hard to win.
On a typically slow surface and after rain delay, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first. India were rocked back early in their batting. Yashasvi Jaiswal managed to score just 10 runs off 9 balls. Sanju Samson returned for a duck and Rinku Singh, who was pushed to number four, managed to score just 1 run. Captain Suryakumar Yadav departed for just 8 runs and India were in trouble as their score read 48-5. Shubman Gill with his 39 runs off 37 balls and Riyan Parag with his 26 runs off 18 balls resurrected the Indian innings.
Washington Sundar scored 25 runs off 18 balls at the end and India could manage to score 17 runs in their 20 overs. The pitch was stunning square and it was going to be a tough chase for the Sri Lankans. However, they took their score to 108-1 and needed just 30 runs off 30 balls to win.
But later, they were held by a superb bowling effort from Team India. An unlikely Rinku Singh bowled the penultimate over and gave away just 3 runs by picking up two wickets when just 9 runs were needed off 12 balls to win.
When India needed to defend 6 runs off the final over, captain Yadav came in to bowl and picked up two wickets, giving away just 5 runs, taking the game to the Super Over. Washington Sundar bowled the Super Over and gave away just 2 runs by picking up both the wickets. Yadav chased down the total easily with a boundary in the very first ball.
