The Big 12 has announced the names of the winners of the season awards. It is a year dominated by players of the Colorado Buffaloes with quarterback Shedeur Sanders taking home the honors for Offensive Player of the Year and dual-position star Travis Hunter taking the Defensive Player of the Year honor.

The two stars led their team to a 9-3 record this year, an improvement from their previous season’s record of 4-8. Head Coach Deion Sanders, who was in the running to win Coach of the Year, fell short to Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, who rightfully won the award after putting the squad in a respectable position to make the College Football Playoff with a 10-2 record.

The two stars from Colorado winning this award were not as surprising, considering they had a remarkable season. Sanders ended the season with 3,926 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, with a 74.2 completion percentage.

The Buffaloes’ offense would not have functioned as effectively as it did if not for him. Despite having a subpar offensive line, Shedeur overcame their shortfalls to put up respectable numbers.

Many confused with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter winning the coveted awards despite a 9-3 finish to the season

The victories of these two stars were overshadowed by calls from fans who questioned Shedeur Sanders winning the award when there was an equally good candidate on the Arizona State Sundevils. The team’s running back Cam Skattebo played a big role in leading the team to the top of the Big 12 conference with 1,398 yards on 247 carries and 17 touchdowns.

Last year, the division awarded the best players from the top 2 teams in the division, Ollie Gordon III and T’Vondre Sweat hailing from Oklahoma State and Texas, respectively. Naturally, it was surprising to see the division head in a different direction this year.

Here’s how fans reacted to the announcements on X:

Travis Hunter won the award on the back of his unforgettable season, wherein he recorded 32 tackles, 11 defended passes, and four interceptions. He was equally good on offense as he had 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns.

This highlights Hunter’s remarkable impact on this team. However, this is not the award that he has his eyes set on as the Heisman Award is the one he hopes to bag.
