Whenever Daniil Medvedev plays Grand Slam matches, he keeps his supporters on the edge of their seats. This is because, in Grand Slam events, him losing the first two sets but making an emphatic comeback later has become a common sight.

Last year at the Australia Open, en route to his five-set defeat to World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the final, Medvedev had played three five-setters, including in the semifinals. This year in Melbourne, two youngsters tested him in the first two rounds.

Although he was successful in the first round, he made an incredible comeback after dropping two sets in the second round and even-handed a ‘breadstick’ to Learner Tien in the fourth set. But he couldn’t taste success in that match.

At the French Open, it was no different. Cameron Norrie took two sets off the Russian in the first round and when the watchers of his game were thinking it was the end of the match, Medvedev did what he does best- win the next two sets to take the match into the decider.

Norrie has now clinched his first victory against Medvedev in five matches. It was also their second meeting on clay, following this year’s Italian Open fourth round.

When Daniil Medvedev clinched the third and fourth set against Cameron Norrie, many had expected him to secure a berth in the second round. But the defeat has caused the first upset in the clay-court Major. Some fans found it amusing to see the 29-year-old toil hard in the first round itself.

Norrie won that match in three hours and 53 minutes with a 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5 scoreline to progress to the French Open second round for the fifth time. It was Medvedev’s sixth first-round defeat in his nine appearances at the French Open.

Norrie has now set himself a second-round clash with Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez. Before setting up the clash with the Briton, the qualifier knocked out America’s Aleksandar Kovacevic. Following his first-round match, Norrie made his feelings known about his victory over the 2021 US Open champion.

It was an incredible atmosphere, I really felt like I had the momentum there. I felt a lot of energy, and I managed to get over the line. He was a little bit tentative, it was honestly a crazy match. He’s so tough to beat, I think I deserve a diploma for beating Medvedev…He’s got me the last four times.

Cameron Norrie said at the press conference

Had Medvedev won that match, he would have set up a blockbuster match against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic if both of them reached the fourth round. But now, Norrie could set up the clash against the Serb, who holds a 5-0 head-to-head record over the five-time ATP title winner.

In the semifinal, Norrie is projected to lock horns with last year’s French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev. If Norrie reaches the semifinal, he could meet World No.1 Jannik Sinner, while in the final, he could face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Before the French Open, Norrie participated in the Geneva Open where his campaign was ended in the semifinal by eventual winner Djokovic. He hasn’t yet lifted a title this season and his best performance was his semifinal appearance in the ATP 250 tournament in the Swiss city.

Norrie has not yet progressed beyond the third round at the French Open (reached the third round in 2021, 2022, and 2023). In the clay-court Major, he was defeated in the first round by Pavel Kotov in five sets.
