Dallas Mavericks designed the perfect play to tie the game when the score was at, 113-111, at the end of regulation time against the New York Knicks. It was a gallant display from the Mavs, who had a number of players missing including key players Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg and long-term absentee, Kyrie Irving.

It has been a rough start to the season and a tough week for Dallas. The team are currently placed 13th in the Western Conference standings as their record slipped to 4-12 after the narrow defeat. Earlier this week, they announced that Nico Harrison was sacked as the general manager of the club following the controversial Luka DoncicAnthony Davis trade that has left Dallas fans fuming.

The Mavs still had a shot at either winning the game with a 3-pointer or tying it with a two-point bucket near the end of regulation, but a layup basket by Dallas guard Brandon Williams was negated after he got whistled for an offensive foul.

With just 3.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the Knicks up by two points, Dallas inbounded the ball from the other side of the court, with Dereck Lively II getting the ball before handing it to Williams, who quickly drove to the basket. The ball went in, but the offensive foul call prevented it from getting counted, giving the Knicks their first win on the road this season.

In the end, officials ruled that Williams committed an offensive foul as he finished through contact, erasing the game-tying basket and ending the Mavs’ final chance.

Dallas Mavericks fans make their feelings known on the internet

While the decision may have been the right one in the end after the referees reviewed the footage, the fans expressed their displeasure as the arena erupted — until the whistle sounded. Here are some of the reactions:

Mark Cuban and Shams Charania share their take on Anthony Davis

Everything seems to be falling apart for the Mavs. A finals run just two seasons ago and a backcourt duo of Doncic and Irving within their ranks, it felt like it was just a matter of time before they would lift their first championship since 2011. But nothing has gone right since.

It started off with the Doncic-Davis trade, and then a long-term injury to Irving followed. The franchise found massive luck in the NBA draft lottery when they were awarded the No. 1 pick and this year’s top prize in coveted prospect, Cooper Flagg.

After the sacking of Harrison, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania spoke about the Mavs’ potential willingness to deal Davis this year.

This franchise is moving away from Nico Harrison’s three-to-four year championship window and toward trying to find sustained success and sustained growth around Cooper Flagg and youth. And to that end, sources have told ESPN that the Mavericks will be listening to trade calls for Anthony Davis and seeing and exploring his value.

Charania’s report contradicts minority owner Mark Cuban’s recent comments surrounding a potential Davis trade. According to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, Cuban is directly involved as an adviser to owner Patrick Dumont and told The Athletic in an email that no such trade would be occurring as the Mavs “want to try to win.”
