Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday have always had a tight rivalry. Things took an ugly turn when supposed Sheffield Wednesday fans were seen instigating Sheffield United followers with a message about a former player of theirs.

Former United defender George Baldock passed away at the tender age of 31 years on October 9. He was found lifeless in the pool of his Athens home five months after he joined Greek outfit Panathinaikos. Before that move, he was a part of United for seven years and played 205 games for the club.

The club are aware of an image circulating on social media and roundly condemn this abhorrent act. We are working together with South Yorkshire Police on an immediate investigation and make it absolutely clear that there is no place in football or society for such appalling behaviour.

Sheffield Wednesday said in an official statement

On the pitch, the Blades secured a slender win against Wednesday. Tyrese Campbell found the back of the net in the 50th minute, which proved to be the decisive goal.

With the win, United climbed to the second spot in the Championship table and went level with Sunderland, who sit at the top with 31 points and a superior goal difference.
