The Fiesta Bowl between the Miami Hurricanes and Ole Miss Rebels ended controversially. Social media is buzzing with fans convinced the Rebels were denied a defensive player interference call on the final play.

Carson Beck scrambled to score a touchdown inside the final minute of the game. It gave Ole Miss enough to orchestrate one final chance. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss completed two passes and burned through the remaining timeouts to set up a Hail Mary finish.

Chambliss threw a long ball into the Miami endzone, praying one of his receivers would catch it and prolong their season for at least half an hour. Unfortunately, the ball deflected off a receiver’s fingertips and went out of bounds. The game ended 31-27, and Miami won its second bowl game in a span of days after beating Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.

However, popular sports critic and Twitter warrior Jon Root noticed some discrepancies from the referees during the Hail Mary try. Root pointed out that the officials missed a clear defensive player interference call by a Miami defensive back.

In the clip shared by Root, the Miami player can be seen shadowing the Rebels’ wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling all the way from the ten-yard mark and into the end zone. The defender then grabbed the collar of Stribling’s jersey and used it to gain leverage over him.

Stribling tried his best to catch the ball but only managed to graze it before hitting the turf. Root and several others wanted the referee to blow the whistle for a defensive player interference penalty. However, the referee looked the other way and blew the final whistle.

Even Lane Kiffin thought it was a DPI. The former Rebels’ head coach, who recently ditched Ole Miss prior to the playoffs to join LSU, shared the video on X.

A penalty would have meant a 15-yard gain and an automatic first down for Ole Miss. However, they still needed to score a touchdown to win. In the end, Miami advanced to the CFP final and will play the winner of the second semifinal between Indiana and Oregon.

Chambliss finished his first year in Mississippi with 3660 yards, 29 total touchdowns, and just 3 picks. He is expected to appeal for another year of eligibility to extend his college football career.

Beck, who will go off to the NFL after the final, has thrown for 3313 yards, 28 total touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He came over from Georgia after Cam Ward transitioned to the big leagues.
