Dominic Thiem has been denied a wild card for what would have been his final Grand Slam appearance in Paris. The Austrian tennis player announced his retirement at the end of the season, intending to bid farewell to all his favorite tournaments, including Roland Garros. However, it seems he won’t have the chance to do so at the French Open.
On Friday, Thiem announced his retirement from professional tennis, citing his inability to recover from a wrist injury. The 2020 US Open champion has fallen outside the top 100 rankings and has struggled to regain his form even on the challenger’s circuit.
Thiem joins Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, and Emma Raducanu as tennis players who have not received wildcards to participate in the second Grand Slam of the year. The former World No.3 reached the French Open final in 2018 and 2019, losing both times to Rafael Nadal.
Despite falling short against the King of Clay in the final, the right-hander has achieved many notable victories on the red clay of Paris. In 2017, he became the first, and to this date, the only player alongside Nadal to deliver a bagel to Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros. In 2019, he defeated the current World No.1 again in a rain-delayed encounter that went to five tantalizing sets.
Given the impact he has had on the Parisian crowd and the circumstances surrounding his career, it comes as a surprise to the entire tennis community that Thiem won’t be competing at Roland Garros.
Thiem was also denied a wildcard for the 2023 Roland Garros due to his ongoing wrist struggles throughout the previous year. However, many anticipated that the French Tennis Federation would grant the Austrian a wildcard after he announced his retirement on Friday.
Roland Garros angers the tennis fans over Dominic Theim’s snub
Roland Garros’ decision not to grant Dominic Thiem his well-deserved farewell has united fans in disappointment. Many have labeled the decision “disgraceful,” while others feel that someone from the French Tennis Federation should address the fans regarding this situation.

After being snubbed by Roland Garros, it remains to be seen if the former US Open champion will follow the path of Andy Murray by competing in a challenger clay tournament. Murray, a former World No.1, will also retire in 2024. The Scottish tennis player is reportedly skipping the second Grand Slam of the year to focus on preparing for his final hurrah at Wimbledon.
Thiem has announced that he will retire in Austria, his home country, at the end of the season. However, his snub from Roland Garros has cast a question mark over his final tennis calendar.
