When Michael Porter Jr. was trying to put an end to the men vs. women debate, in terms of basketball prowess, he mentioned going up against and defeating a team featuring Sophie Cunningham.

His point was that, as an 8th grader, he was better than a women’s college basketball team, as he dominated as a scout team player, leaving his older sisters and the current Indiana Fever star unable to handle his athleticism.

This revelation caused some furor on social media, with many wondering why he would make such a claim, especially when the women he played against were barely 2 or 3 years older than him.

He particularly came under fire from former WNBA All-Star Angel McCoughtry, who wondered why elite NBA superstars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James never belittle women, unlike these new-age stars.

She instead pointed out how they uplift them, especially when considering that women have to manage pregnancy and their families while doing their best to hold down a job in the WNBA.

This debate soon reached Sophie Cunningham‘s ears, who took to her podcast, Show Me Something, to clarify what should and should not be compared.

I think, if you are a professional, if you’re in that elite level group, yeah, you should be able to beat the girls! I’m not surprised by that… The context of it is fair… I mean, it’s probably true.

Sophie Cunningham said

The 29-year-old reiterated that top 8th-grade prospects are usually bigger, faster, and stronger than prime WNBA players. It is just how genetics are, and no matter what her peers think, it is not going to change the fact that those boys can defeat them in a straight battle.

Fans appreciate Sophie Cunningham for speaking the truth

Once this clip from their latest podcast episode reached social media, fans were quick to laud Sophie Cunningham for saying what some WNBA stars were not willing to accept.

In a day and age when there is a constant jostle for supremacy, the Indiana Fever star agreeing with Michael Porter Jr.’s 8th-grade logic had fans claiming she was not bowing down to woke logic.

They believe she has finally put the debate to rest, as the physical differences between men and women made the debate seem a trifle. Check out examples of such reactions below.

Sophie Cunningham did say that in that specific context of battling 8th-grade NBA prospects, Porter Jr.’s logic is true. But she did not say that men in general can just outduel WNBA stars. Thankfully, fans did not catch on to that claim, else another debate would have started.

Sophie Cunningham’s Fever will pick 10th in next year’s draft

On her professional front, Sophie Cunningham is waiting alongside her peers to see how the next CBA pans out. They are looking to get the maximum raise possible, while also hoping the league eases their schedule.

This year’s draft lottery was conducted earlier, where the Dallas Wings, who had the highest possibility of winning, ended up with their 2nd straight No. 1 overall pick.

After them, the Minnesota Lynx, who own the Chicago Sky’s pick, will select at No. 2, followed by the Seattle Storm and the Washington Mystics. The Sky will still have a chance at a top prospect when they select at No. 5.

The Fever, after their brilliant run in the playoffs last season, will select 10th. Before this year’s college basketball season started, mock drafts had South Carolina forward Chloe Kitts as the one the Fever should select.

After an injury ended her senior season, the team will now be back to the drawing board, looking at potential prospects who can help Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, and the others go one better and challenge for a championship.
