Newcastle United stormed their way into the EFL Cup final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Arsenal. The clubs competed in the second-leg of a thrilling semi-final encounter. It marked the second time in the last four seasons that Arsenal have crashed out of the EFL Cup semi-finals.

Eddie Howe‘s Newcastle United side moved a step closer to ending their 56-year long wait for a trophy. Their last major trophy came back in 1969, when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The Magpies will now face Tottenham or Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup. In the semi-finals, Newcastle already had a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, and finished the second leg in an emphatic manner.

Meanwhile, for the Gunners, it marks disappointment, as they remain in the hunt to win an EFL Cup for the last 30 years. Arsenal are also yet to win a piece of silverware since the 2023 season. Mikel Arteta‘s hopes of winning a trophy this season has now been limited to the EPL and the UCL, after having been knocked out of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

At St. James Park, the home side made a flying start. Jacob Murphy slotted home a rebound in the 19th minute, after Alexander Isak‘s shot hit the post. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made a horrendous error in the 52nd minute. It allowed Anthony Gordon to put the ball into the back of the net with a simple finish. He helped Newcastle win 4-0 on aggregate.

Moreover, it also marked Arsenal’s third straight defeat to Newcastle United this season, with them having lost once in the Premier League as well. The Gunners will now be hoping to bounce back, when they face Leicester City next.

Arsenal fans were left frustrated after the full-time whistle, and complained that the club would go trophy-less for another season. Some other fans hilariously claimed that Arsenal’s only achievement this season has been beating Manchester City 5-1. A few other fans urged Mikel Arteta and his men to ‘stay humble’, referencing past incidents.

Meanwhile, the Gunners’ EPL title challenge has also been dealt a severe blow. Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli was forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury, and is now expected to spend an extended spell on the sidelines. It remains to be seen if the club will go trophy-less this season.
