Barcelona are thriving under Hansi Flick, be it in La Liga or in the Champions League. With just three defeats across all competitions this season, the club are very well on their way to fight for the UCL and La Liga title. Despite several injuries to top players, Flick has managed to keep his side functioning at full capacity.

One of the most notable injuries is that of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who tore the patellar tendon in his right knee. With his return period likely to be around that of a year, the club has resorted to back-up keeper Inaki Pena. Even though the Spaniard hasn’t been perfect in between the sticks, the club has only lost two games ever since.

Recently, Sporting director Deco spoke to the press as he shut out all rumors of the club looking to sign Portuguese keeper Diogo Costa. This comes after reports surfaced connecting the 25-year-old to the Catalan giants.

Our priority is Ter Stegen who is under contract for the next 3 years. We won’t sign anyone to replace him.

Deco told the Spanish press

He also claimed that Costa himself wouldn’t be thinking of joining the club as a back-up for the German.

Fans react to Sporting director Deco’s confident Ter Stegen claim

Not all Barcelona supporters are a fan of Marc-André ter Stegen continuing at the club. With fans finding several faults in his mentality and gameplay, there have been calls for the management to offload the player.

However, since the Sporting director himself has no plans of the same, supporters have taken to social media to express their dissent.

A fan commented that Barcelona have willingly chosen not to a win a trophy by opting to keep Ter Stegen. Another added that Deco tried to make it clear in a different way that Barcelona do not have money to sign another keeper. A few fans were adamant that Inaki Pena be given a real chance to prove his worth rather than getting rid of him once Ter Stegen recovers.

Hansi Flick had also announced his trust in the young keeper previously. With Pena’s performances as good as of late, it isn’t likely that a new keeper is headed Barca’s way. As things stand, Barcelona are top of La Liga, although Real Sociedad handed them their second defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss at the Anoeta.
