Fans mocked Dutch center-back Matthijs de Ligt, following his erroneous display for the national team against Bosnia, in a UEFA Nations League match. The 25-year-old was at fault during the Netherlands’ 5-2 win, leading to the team conceding two goals.

Netherlands entered the match as favorites, and went on to register a massive 5-2 victory over Bosnia, putting them just behind Germany in the Nations League table. They had previously finished as runners- up in 2019, losing the final to Portugal. Most recently, goals from Joshua Zirkzee, Cody Gakpo, Xavi Simons, Tijjani Reijnders and Wout Weghorst helped them seal the win. However, they failed to keep the clean sheet as Bosnia struck two goals, owing to defensive errors from Matthijs de Ligt.

The new Manchester United signing endured a difficult evening in Eindhoven. His poor positioning and judgement led to Bosnia’s Ermedin Demirovic taking the ball past him, to score a goal in the 26th minute. Another error in the second half allowed Edin Dzeko to score the second goal for Bosnia. The defender misjudged a cross into the penalty area, which was capitalized by Dzeko. His errors left both his Dutch teammates and fans furious, as they sharply reacted to it.

Speaking after the match, however, the former Bayern defender accepted his fault, while also expressing frustration over not being able to put up a decent display. He endured a similar performance in his first EPL outing, against Liverpool, as the Reds won 3-0.

Fans slam Manchester United’s new signing Matthijs de Ligt over his poor Nations League display

Football fans were quick to react to Matthijs de Ligt’s horror show for the Netherlands, in a 5-2 win over Bosnia, as they shared their reactions on social media. The fans drew similarities between the 25-year-old and United star Harry Maguire, pointing to both of the players’ ‘amateur’ defensive errors.

One fan asked De Ligt about who he was actually marking during the match. Another fan jokingly labeled his performance as a ‘De Ligt masterclass’. A supporter commented that the former Juventus defender looked lost, humorously terming him as the ‘Dutch Maguire’. One fan, however, responded by claiming that Maguire had better defensive skills. 

Meanwhile, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman defended the player, after his horrendous performance. De Ligt, moreover, exclaimed that he was happy with his move to the EPL, claiming that it has more viewers compared to the Bundesliga.
