Paris Saint-Germain’s poor Champions League campaign continued, as they suffered a poor 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in their fourth league stage encounter. The French giants, following the recent defeat, fear missing out on the qualification places.
After a defeat to Arsenal and a draw against PSV, the French side were hoping to get their UCL campaign back on track. However, Atletico gave them a stunning blow, as the French side now finds itself in the 25th position on the UCL table. Luis Enrique’s side have now won just one out of their first four matches, and only have four points. They have also faltered in terms of goal-scoring, having scored just three goals and conceded five in four games.
Despite having scored first through Warren Zaire-Emery in the 14th minute, the French side could not hold onto their lead. Atletico’s Nahuel Molina leveled the score just four minutes later, as the match looked set for a disappointing draw. However, substitute Angel Correa scored a dramatic late equalizer to seal the match for the visitors. The Argentine scored from a brilliant counter-attack, putting the ball past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Manager Luis Enrique however, brushed off the defeat as ‘bad luck’.

PSG would have to now stage a comeback against Bayern Munich, while hoping to make it through to the knock-out stages of the competition. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid themselves badly needed to win the match. They are now in the 23rd position on the 36-team UCL table with six points, at the halfway stage.

In case PSG fails to make it to the knock-out stages, it would be for the first time since 2005. During the 2004-05 season, the club was eliminated out of the group stages. The French side has made it to two semi-finals and a final in the last five seasons but failed to win.
