It was a clash between two MVP contenders – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. In what turned out to be a thrilling game between two strong Western Conference teams, the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, came out on top and registered a 129-126 victory over the Denver Nuggets at the Paycom Center on Monday night.
It was their third meeting of the 2025-26 regular-season and the Thunder have won all three matches. The Thunder extended their winning streak to six games and sit at the top of the Western Conference standings with a 51-15 record.
Meanwhile, the Nuggets dropped to sixth place in the standings, with a record of 39-26. Their previous matchup saw a heated altercation between Jokic and Lu Dort. However, this time, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a huge MVP moment as he recorded 35 points and a career-high 15 assists, including a step-back three-pointer in the closing seconds. Jokic posted another triple-double this season as he ended his night with 32 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists.
Over the last three seasons, SGA has averaged 30+ points per game and is on track to make it four in a row this season. He is second in the league in scoring and is currently averaging 31.7 points per game. Many pundits and analysts believe his scoring numbers and efficiency put him in the same tier as Michael Jordan. He has even been called the ‘Michael Jordan of modern NBA‘ by former Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce.
In his post-match press conference, SGA was asked about his step-back three in the clutch.
I had no clue what I was gonna do. I have answers to the test… but I gotta see the questions first.

The Thunder are 6-0 since Gilgeous-Alexander returned from an abdominal strain that sidelined him for nine games. They will be looking to extend that streak as they take on the Boston Celtics on March 12 at home.

This isn’t nearly as nuanced as he meant it to be. He basically described how you take a test unless you didn’t study.

Bro SGA always keeping it 100 😭🔥 I love this mindset, it’s so real and human. Got the skills, just gotta read the moment, literally the definition of clutch energy. Respect the confidence and the calm under pressure.

The fans loved his response and appreciated his mindset. Many also believe that after the result on Monday night, SGA has all but sealed the MVP race.
Nikola Jokic on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s new scoring record
To add to the win on Monday, SGA also tied Wilt Chamberlain‘s NBA record for consecutive games (126) with at least 20 points. Gilgeous-Alexander last scored fewer than 20 points in a regular-season game on Oct. 30, 2024, when he had 18 in a 105-93 home win against the San Antonio Spurs.
Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic spoke about SGA tying Chamberlain’s record in his post-match interview.

I don’t know that people know how hard it is to do that. To make 20 points in 10 (straight) games, not 120 whatever it is, it’s special. He’s a special player.
