Kerber was the favorite not only due to her nationality but also being a two-time former champ. She won the title in 2015 and defended it successfully in 2016. A win over the former World No. 10 would have given her a 17th-match win which would have made them the most successful player at the tournament since it became a clay event.

But it was the 21-year-old’s day. She is now 8-5 for the season and buzzing with confidence as the hunt for her first title since the US Open singles win in 2021 continues.

Fans stunned by Emma Raducanu’s consistency

Raducanu last won three consecutive matches at the 2023 Indian Wells Open. She reached the fourth round at the WTA-1000 event before being defeated by Iga Swiatek. The Briton then played in Miami before trying her luck in Stuttgart.

Following her early exit in Stuttgart, she had to undergo surgery on her arm. As a result, she eventually missed the remainder of the season. After a mixed start to the 2024 season, the three wins on the trot will do good for her confidence. Fans however found it another chance to poke fun at the youngster.

Many others were delighted with Raducanu’s recent form. Winning a Grand Slam as a qualifier is no joke. Consistent injuries and constant media pressure may have taken a toll on the 21-year-old but she is now again showing her true potential and building her form back.

Raducanu will now take on Linda Noskova in the second round. The Czech player defeated Jelena Ostapenko to make the second round. She currently trails 0-1 in head-to-head against the Briton. Their only previous meeting took place in the first round of the 2022 French Open where Raducanu won in three sets.
