Football fans mocked Manchester City star Erling Haaland for his poor performance for Norway, as they were humiliated 5-1 by Austria in the Nations League. The 24-year-old forward later apologized for the defeat, branding his team’s display as ‘too bad’.
Erling Haaland endured a miserable outing as Norway skipper, replacing Martin Odegaard who has been suffering from a long-term ankle injury. Haaland’s goal-scoring prowess was of no use during his side’s 5-1 defeat at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz, Austria. The Man City forward, most recently, became Norway’s all-time top goal-scorer, with 34 goals in 36 matches. However, against Austria, he had no shot on target and just hit the woodwork once, in the 90 minutes that he spent on the pitch.
Austria were dominant all throughout the match, as Marko Arnautovic opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Alexander Sorloth leveled the score for the visitors, but Arnatovic’s 49th minute penalty helped Austria take the lead. Philipp Lienhart, Stefan Posch and Michael Gregoritsch struck a goal each to complete the victory.

There have been serious concerns about Haaland’s goal-scoring form against big teams, which needs to come handy against Norway’s next opponents, Slovenia and Kazakhstan. The EPL star was also criticized for declining to respond to questions, during the post-match conference. Norway have now taken up the top spot in their Nations League group, level on points with second-placed Austria and third-placed Slovenia.
Fans slam Erling Haaland for his poor display for Norway, in 5-1 drubbing against Austria
Manchester City front-man and stand-in Norway skipper Erling Haaland was criticized for his poor display against Austria, during a 5-1 Nations League drubbing. The 24-year-old, in his first match as national team captain, suffered a defeat as four Austrian players found their names on the score-sheet.
A few fans angrily stated that Haaland remained invisible during the match, while some others hilariously labeled him as a ‘ghost’. One fan, while commending Austria’s second half display, jokingly stated that the Norwegian team forgot to come out of the locker room at half-time. One fan angrily remarked that the former Dortmund forward should never captain the national team again.
