Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez captivated fans with his standout performance against Bayern Munich in a UEFA Champions League second-round encounter. The EPL side registered a historic 1-0 win over their German rivals, at home. 

Emiliano Martinez was named Man of the Match against Bayern, helping his side make it two wins out of two in the UCL. He made seven crucial saves, with three of them standing out including a shot from Harry Kane and another close-range effort. Meanwhile, Villa forward Jhon Duran struck a brilliant goal in the 79th minute, just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute. The 20-year-old young forward caught Manuel Neuer out of position to put through a composed lofted finish.

Having most recently received a two-match ban for inappropriate behavior during a national team outing, Martinez made a statement save against Bayern in injury time. In the 96th minute of the match, the visitors put the ball into the Villa penalty box, following which Joshua Kimmich lobbed it straight to Harry Kane, who struck a brilliant shot. To his shock, the Argentinian goalkeeper flew through the air to slap the ball away from the goal.

It was a repeat of the historic 1982 European Cup final when Villa defeated the Bavarian giants to win the title. Meanwhile, Unai Emery’s side continued with their impressive start to the UCL campaign, and find themselves in 6th position on the UCL table, much ahead of other EPL rivals.

Emiliano Martinez starred for Aston Villa during a 1-0 victory over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, at the Villa Park stadium in Birmingham. The club skipper was praised by fans on social media, for recording seven saves all throughout the 90 minutes of the match.

Some fans labelled the 32-year-old as ‘best goalkeeper in the world’, while a few others claimed that his performance was better compared to Manuel Neuer’s. A Barcelona fan surprisingly suggested the club sign Martinez, while another hilariously claimed that the goalkeeper was exacting revenge for Barca’s infamous 8-2 defeat to Bayern, which featured Lionel Messi. Here are some of the reactions:

Emi Martinez’s side is making a mark in the UCL, after returning to the competition following a long hiatus since the 1982-83 season. They have also been performing well in the EPL, winning four out of their first six matches.
