Fans were left thrilled following Ligue 1 side Lille’s shocking 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the UCL league stages. It marked the French club’s second straight win over a major La Liga side, after having defeated Real Madrid 1-0 earlier this month.
Atletico Madrid have now endured one of their worst starts to the Champions League campaign, earning two back-to-back defeats in the initial stages of the competition. Despite a strong start to the match against Lille, the visitors bounced back to claim a brilliant comeback victory.
An early 8th minute error allowed Julian Alvarez to open the scoring for the home side. However, Lille staged an impressive fightback, helped by a goal from Edon Zhergova, followed by a brilliant brace from Jonathan David.
Canadian forward Jonathan David showed off his superb goal-scoring prowess, just ten minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute. It marked UCL history for the French side, who have made it two out of two wins against Madrid clubs.
They had previously stunned Real Madrid by earning a 1-0 win over the defending champions, thanks to a penalty goal by David. Fans praised Lille manager Bruno Genesio for his tactics as well as substitution strategies, that heavily paid off against the two Madrid giants.
