Alijah Arenas accident causes NBA fans to cuss out Elon Musk, Cybertrucks for unsafe design elements: “Death machines”

Alijah Arenas

Gilbert Arenas’ son and top college prospect Alijah Arenas was involved in a life-threatening car crash today. The 18-year-old was placed into a medically induced coma according to latest reporting.

ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania made the unfortunate tweet, “Five-star prospect and USC commit Alijah Arenas was involved in a serious car crash early Thursday morning, hospitalized and placed into an induced coma, sources tell ESPN. Arenas, 18, is the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas.”

According to more reports emerging from TMZ, Arenas was placed into an induced coma due to smoke inhalation. Luckily for the star prospect, he did not suffer from any broken bones. Alijah was driving his Tesla Cybertruck during the wee morning hours around 4:55 AM when the crash took place.

TMZ reporters have added that the truck was found completely mangled on the side of the road when emergency services rolled in to rescue the young talent. This incident adds to yet another negative headline involving the Cybertruck, which has several safety red flags in its design.

NBA fans and casuals alike piled on Tesla and Elon Musk for the unsafe design of their rare vehicle. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Alijah was trapped inside the vehicle after being autolocked – a famously nagging issue that Tesla have resolutely refused to rectify after being identified in early 2025. Being trapped inside the vehicle would explain him inhaling life-threating amounts of smoke.

People have also been critical of his father Gilbert Arenas for allowing his son to drive a vehicle that is verifiably unsafe and has been subjected to recalls all across the country due to its safety issues.

Alijah Arenas has a glowing basketball resume

Alijah Arenas is the no. 4 player in his high school class, as well as the no. 1 guard. The 6’7″ shooting guard has been a commendable two-way player, as well as a dominant scorer. He has reclassified to the class of 2025 and will join college if he stays healthy this upcoming fall.

Arenas has averaged over 30 points per game during his high school career thus far, having added a potent scoring skillset under the expert guidance of his NBA star dad. The young star had committed to USC in January during his senior year of high school. He has also announced a sponsorship deal with Adidas ahead of joining college.

All basketball fans would be earnestly hoping that Arenas stages a comeback as soon as possible. Much like Bronny James after an untimely heart attack in 2023, Alijah’s basketball career could be in real jeopardy.
