Choke? Fans Question Suryakumar Yadav’s Mettle After Yet Another No-Show Under Pressure Against South Africa

Prior to the New Zealand series this year, Suryakumar Yadav had endured a tough run in T20Is, going without scoring a fifty in 22 innings in a row.

In Short
  • Suryakumar Yadav criticized for poor performance under pressure in T20 World Cup match against South Africa.
  • India suffered a heavy 76-run defeat, with Yadav scoring only 18 runs off 22 balls.
  • Fans question Yadav's captaincy and call for changes in the team following repeated failures in ICC tournaments.

Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is facing criticism from fans for his inability to perform under pressure during the Super Eight clash against South Africa. The Men in Blue suffered a devastating 76-run loss to the Proteas, with Yadav’s contribution a mere 18 runs.

It was an evening of dropped chances for the Indian team, as they lost their first Super Eight clash by a hefty margin. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, India started well, reducing the Proteas to 20/3, thanks to effective spells from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.

However, David Miller (63 off 35) and Dewald Brevis (45 off 29) stitched a 97-run fourth-wicket stand off 50 balls, before Tristan Stubbs hit a quick-fire 44 off 24 to take the visitors to 187/7.

The match against South Africa exposed a significant weakness: India’s inexperience in chasing a total. India struggled during the chase, losing Ishan Kishan for a duck. Shivam Dube (42 off 37 balls) was the only Indian player who went past 20 runs, while five others were dismissed for single-digit scores. Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya failed to fire, with India finishing with just 111 runs.

The onus fell upon captain Suryakumar Yadav’s shoulders, who was dismissed after scoring a slow 18 runs off 22 balls, caught by Brevis off Corbin Bosch‘s delivery. Instead of playing his usual aggressive game, Yadav appeared stuck, only hitting two boundaries during his brief stay on the pitch. While the 35-year-old began his T20 World Cup campaign on a high with a match-winning 84 runs off 49 balls against the USA, his subsequent innings have been meager.

Many on social media were quick to point out the Mumbai star’s record in ICC tournaments while batting under pressure. The 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia is perhaps the most cited instance where he scored only 18 runs off 28 balls. During the 2022 T20 WC semi-final against England, Yadav was similarly dismissed for a low score of 14 runs. Other notable instances remain the 2021 T20 WC clash against Pakistan, and the 2024 WC final against South Africa.

Suryakumar Yadav entered the 2026 T20 WC following an impressive return to form in the New Zealand series, where he was named Player of the Series for scoring 242 runs across five matches. He is now expected to lead the charge in India’s upcoming Super Eights fixtures.

Criticism mounts on captain Suryakumar Yadav over ‘choking’ under pressure vs. South Africa

Suryakumar Yadav seemed far away from his best when the Indian team faced off against South Africa in the ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup. Fans and social media users slammed the Indian T20I captain for his poor batting performance and captaincy decisions.

While supporters of the Indian captain pointed out that Yadav’s ‘high-risk’ style is prone to low scores, critics highlighted the clear pattern of the Indian skipper failing to score in critical stages. Several fans exclaimed that the India skipper can only score big against weaker opponents, citing his previous innings against sides like Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Hong Kong.

Fans were also quick to suggest that Yadav’s arrogance and over-confidence during the pre-match press-conference is what cost the game. Some fans labelled him the most ‘overhyped’ player, while others called for his removal from captaincy. A few of them strongly criticized Yadav’s shot selection, while noting that players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer should be given an opportunity.

At the post-match media presser, Yadav blamed poor batting for the defeat to South Africa. However, he maintained that the Indian T20I team would not abandon their aggressive playing style, expressing confidence in his players.
