Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have been a significant threat to Liverpool and Chelsea in the title race, or at least until yesterday. The Gunners came up against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday night as a goalless draw poured water over Arsenal’s ‘title charge’.

While Liverpool failed to come out victorious against Fulham in a 2-2 draw, Arsenal‘s failure to capitalize on the situation evoked wild reactions on social media. Arsenal enjoyed the clear majority of chances against The Toffees.

However, a resolute Everton backline and Jordan Pickford kept out several attempts on goal by the hosts. To begin with, captain Martin Odegaard missed a chance in front of goal to put his side ahead in the game.

Moments later, the midfielder missed another opportunity to find the net as his shot from the edge of the penalty box went inches wide of goal. Pickford’s personal battle against Odegaard and Bukayo Saka had only one victor as the final score read 0-0.

The result now means that Arsenal remain in third, with 30 points from 16 games. A win would’ve seen the Gunners cut down the gap with Liverpool to just four points and leapfrog rivals Chelsea. Arsenal’s next game is against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup quarterfinal.

Fans react to Arsenal’s frustrating draw against Everton

In reaction to the frustrating result, a fan commented that Arsenal as a club doesn’t have what’s needed to win the Premier League. Another added that Mikel Arteta‘s search for a title will continue as long as his team fails to capitalize when it matters the most.

A frustrated fan said that Arsenal can only go so far with the ‘annoying’ set piece tactic. Fans also laughed at how Arsenal players struggled to score from open play after set pieces failed to come to their rescue. Certain supporters called for a ‘proper’ striker to be brought in during the January transfer window, with Gabriel Jesus needing to be ‘sold.’

A fan pointed out that Arsenal hasn’t scored a single goal since November that isn’t from a set piece routine. With Arsenal and Liverpool being held to draws, Chelsea are the true winners.

A win for the Blues tonight will take Enzo Maresca‘s side within a point of Liverpool. Even though the Reds have a game in hand, Chelsea breathing down their necks will put enough pressure on Arne Slot and co. Arsenal’s next game in the Premier League is against Crystal Palace after the winter break.
