FC Barcelona sporting director Deco‘s recent admission on why the club refrained from signing Nico Williams has fans riled up. The Portuguese legend exclaimed that the club did not wish to add new wingers to an already inflated squad.

Nico Williams was one of Barcelona’s top summer transfer targets after an impressive Euro outing with the Spanish national team. His brilliant partnership with Barca prodigy Lamine Yamal during La Roja’s Euro-winning campaign was deemed to be key to the transfer.

However, Williams, despite receiving a €7.5 million year contract offer, decided to stay back at Bilbao. This dashed the Catalan club’s hopes and they turned their attention in bringing in Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig.

However, Deco provided a clarification on why Barcelona did not sign the talented Basque winger, who had 24 goals contributions last season. The ex-Barca midfielder stated that the club was not interested in signing another winger, given the depth they possess in the attack. He exclaimed that the club already has Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, Lamine, Fermin Lopez and newcomer Olmo, making it irrelevant to sign newer wingers.

We have Raphinha, Ferran, Ansu, we have Lamine... Fermin. Signing Dani Olmo gave us more options. It’s not that we haven’t spoken with clubs and players, but in the end we had priorities that were decisive in not bringing in another winger.

Deco’s explanation was in contrast to assumptions that the club’s financial inabilities led to its decision to not sign Nico Williams. Meanwhile, the Catalan side had a rather quiet transfer summer, making just one summer signing while offloading several players.

Barcelona fans mocked club director Deco for his recent statement on why the Catalan club did not sign Spanish Euro 2024 star Nico Williams despite long-drawn transfer rumours. The club failed to sign the 22-year-old from Athletic Bilbao this summer despite having a reasonably-priced release clause of €58 million ($63.2 million).

A few fans slammed the ex-Barca star and claimed that he was lying, as the club had chased Williams’ signature for more than a month but had to opt out due to financial constraints. Some fans were angry with Deco and blamed him for the club’s inability to sign new players. A few fans, however, backed his comments, surprisingly stating that Ansu Fati is a better player than the 22-year-old Bilbao star.

Here are some of the fan reactions:

Barcelona’s financial situation has been poor for some time now. This led to €62 million new signing Dami Olmo having to wait for a month to be officially registered in the club’s La Liga squad.
