Inter Miami skipper Lionel Messi mocked booing Mexican supporters during a pre-season friendly encounter against Club America in Las Vegas. The 37-year-old forward reminded the jeering Mexican fans of their nation’s FIFA World Cup records.
MLS Supporters’ Shield winners Inter Miami hosted Mexican giants Club America, as Lionel Messi‘s side triumphed on penalties after full-time scores tied 2-2. It also marked Javier Mascherano’s first game in charge of the Herons, replacing Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino. Messi, who made his comeback onto the pitch after a long break, scored Miami’s opener with a close-range header in the 34th minute.
The Argentine skipper was subject to intense jeers and boos throughout the first half of the match from traveling Club America supporters. He responded by taunting them during his celebrations after scoring a goal. He first turned around and pointed to his name at the back of his shirt, reminding fans of his legacy. Following this, he patted Inter Miami‘s club crest on top of his shirt.

The ex-Barcelona forward went a step further by then raising his hand in the air to show three fingers toward the booing fans. It was a reference to Argentina’s three World Cup trophies, one of which he had won as captain in 2022. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner moved his hand into a fist shape to represent zero. He surprisingly aimed a dig at Mexico’s poor World Cup record.
