It was an anti-climatic end to Chris Paul‘s second stint with the Los Angeles Clippers. The franchise announced on Wednesday early morning that they would be letting go of the 12-time NBA All-Star, who had announced that the 2025-26 season would be the final chapter of his illustrious career.
The “Point God” had previously spent six years with the Clippers from 2011-17. While some club may sign the veteran guard very soon, it was a disappointing decision by the organization as they went ahead with it without even informing Chris Paul.
Paul was not just any player for the Clippers, he is arguably their greatest ever player and their biggest legend. The former number four pick has the most assists (4,076) in franchise history and is sixth in the club’s all-time scoring list (7,721).
It is not Paul’s fault that the franchise find themselves in a horrid position at the moment. Despite boasting the likes of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, the Clippers are currently placed at 13th in the Western Conference standings with a 6-16 record. Their poor run of results are largely due to injuries and unavailability of their star players.
Paul was restricted to a bench role as he averaged 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in under 15 minutes this season. Undoubtedly, one of the greatest point-guards in the game, Paul, may most likely end his career without winning an NBA championship but he sits second for the most assists all-time in the league with 12,554 assists to his name, only behind John Stockton.

James Harden was unaware of the decision
It was not just a surprise to Chris Paul and the NBA world but to Clippers stars Leonard and Harden as well. It seems that the Clippers management went ahead with the decision without consulting any of the players.

While the real reason for the decision has not been revealed, Lawrence Frank, who is the President of Basketball Operations for the Clippers emphasized that the Clippers’ poor performance is not because of Paul and he takes responsibility for it. It was also reported that there were tensions between Paul and head coach, Ty Lue, over the last few weeks.
Harden, who played with Paul for two seasons during their time in Houston was surprised as well.
I’m just as confused and shocked as everyone else in the world. It definitely took me by surprise. It’s not just about Chris, there were many things we were dealing with. However, that’s out of my hands. I need to focus on what I can control. I suppose the front office believed that was the best decision for the organization.
NBA fans will be hoping for the best as nobody would want Paul’s 21-year career to come to an end like this.
