It has been a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign for Paul George. After suffering from knee injuries that cut his last season short, George missed the first few games of the current season as well. The forward has made 16 appearances so far and has started to show some signs that he is nearing top condition. After going 0-4 with the Big Three, the Philadelphia 76ers have won back-to-back games now.
Coming off an overtime win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, the 76ers recorded a convincing 123-108 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Centre on Thursday night. Tyrese Maxey led the scorers with 34 points. Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe both had 20-point games while Paul George scored 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.
The win propelled the 76ers to 18-14 as they are currently placed at fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, while the Dallas Mavericks have suffered four losses in a row and find themselves at 13th place in a highly competitive Western Conference.
It was George’s fifth consecutive double-digit game after a seven-point game against the New York Knicks on December 19. During his and Embiid’s absence, it was Maxey who has been carrying the offensive workload for the 76ers.
The 76ers guard is having an MVP caliber season and is currently third in points per game this season behind Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Due to the rise of Maxey and Embiid’s dominance when healthy, George has been more of a third option for the team.
After undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee, many believed that a 35-year-old George would lose some of his explosiveness and athleticism. Since his return from injury, George has been averaging 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 16 games this season. But the forward showed the fans on Thursday that he still has it in his legs after an explosive dunk.

The 76ers fans, who are known to be a tough crowd, will be hoping that their big three can stay healthy for the remainder of the season as they will fancy their chances in a wide-open Eastern Conference.

Joel Embiid is getting back to his old self
Just like George, Joel Embiid has struggled with injuries as well and has been restricted to just 15 games so far. But the 2023 NBA MVP has started to find his form and is reaching his top condition. Embiid has scored over 20 points in his last six games, which include three 30-point games as well. The center is currently averaging 22.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists at the moment.

Following the win, the big man spoke about himself and reflected on the team’s performance in a locker-room interview.
I feel like I’m getting back to myself. Tonight is a perfect example different than Memphis. I just made plays for each other, taking what the defense gives me. We played together collectively. It’s a good win, and we just have to keep building on it.
Promising signs ahead for the 76ers. They take on the second seeds, the New York Knicks, on January 3, which would be a good test for the 76ers, considering the Knicks are one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference.
