Fans rejoiced as Real Madrid claimed an impressive 3-2 comeback victory over Manchester City at the Etihad in the Champions League play-offs. It hands the Los Blancos a massive advantage ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu. 

Real Madrid and Manchester City faced each other for the fourth consecutive season in the UCL knock-outs. Both teams have been made to play an extra play-offs round in order to make their place among the last 16. Real Madrid finished 11th on the UCL standings with 15 points from eight matches. Meanwhile, Man City finished a dismal 22nd on the table, narrowly escaping elimination.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for the home side in the 19th minute. It was thanks to an assist by Josko Gvardiol. Kylian Mbappe brought Real Madrid back into the game on the hour mark with a mis-hit volley. However, Haaland struck once again from the penalty spot late on. The spot-kick was awarded for Dani Ceballos’ foul on Man City forward Phil Foden.

The match seemed to be going City’s way. However, Brahim Diaz fired a goal against his former club in the 86th minute. The Moroccan midfielder scored from a rebound after Vinicius Jr.’s shot was blocked by Ederson. In the 92nd minute, the Brazilian shot-stopper was once again caught in no-man’s land. Vinicius Jr.’s lofted shot was put into the back of an empty net by Jude Bellingham. 

Nonetheless, the match is far from over. The two sides meet each other once again at the Santiago Bernabeu next week for the second leg. Should Real Madrid make it through to the round of 16, they will either take on Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.

A few others hailed Jude Bellingham for his impressive display, stating that no other midfielder can match the Englishman’s talent. A section of fans hilariously exclaimed that the match proves that Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is better than his Man City counterpart, Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois joined in with the fans to rejoice in the club’s win. After the match, the Belgian star went on to exclaim that their desire to win the match was stronger than City’s.
