Reigning EPL champions Manchester City have been fined over £2 million by the Premier League for 22 kick-off and restart delays over the past two seasons. The news of this fine has sparked strong reactions from fans worldwide.

Manchester City has admitted to violating Premier League Rule L.33 concerning kick-off times and restarts. The club was fined for these breaches, which took place during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, amounting to a total of £2.09 million for 22 separate counts. The longest delay was two minutes and 46 seconds at the start of their final game against West Ham last season, with the total delayed restart time being 39 minutes and 52 seconds.

The Premier League in a later statement, emphasized on the importance of adhering to kick-off and restart rules. These regulations contribute to the overall professionalism of the competition. Moreover, the PL highlighted that these regulations help keep the broadcast schedule for all 380 league matches each season. Manchester City have now entered into a sanction agreement with league authorities, which has been ratified by a judicial panel.

However, the Cityzens clarified that these breaches are separate from the more serious financial misconduct allegations the club is currently facing. The EPL winners are contesting charges related to regulation breaches between 2009 and 2018.

With the club now in significant legal trouble, fans angrily insisted that the club should face harsher penalties for its discrepancies over the past few seasons. Some labeled the club and its owners as ‘corrupt,’ calling for point deductions similar to Everton’s. Another fan humorously suggested that Arsenal might win the EPL if City is convicted and penalized.

This recent fine adds to the club’s existing list of breaches in the EPL, which they are contesting. The 115 charges against Manchester City are being reviewed by top courts, with a decision expected by November this year.
