As the Australian progresses, one major recurring question that has become common in press conferences involving American players has been about their current political situation in the United States of America. The questions come amid the domestic and international tension linked with President Donald Trump.

Since Trump kicked off his second term in office less than one year ago, there have been political and policy shifts. He has kept to his promises on tightening the US immigration policies, but has shockingly led his government to mass arrest and deport migrants, who he claims came into the country illegally.

Coupled with the domestic situation, he recently made an intentional controversy by arresting Venezuela’s former president and dictator, Nicolas Maduro, and now threatens to take Greenland by force, which has been a huge subject of debate in Europe. However, at the Australian Open, players seem remote from the situation as they focus on the championship.

But some journalists in Melbourne have brought the tension to the forefront of the tournament. First, Coco Gauff was asked about the situation, and she expressed that her concern has been primarily about human rights and social equity. But other leading names in American tennis were asked the same question, including Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, and Taylor Fritz.

Fritz was asked for his opinion on his country’s situation after winning his second-round match at the Australian Open. The question undoubtedly caught the American off guard during his press conference as he pointed out that he doesn’t want to be in the headlines at a major tournament:

I mean, not sure what we’re like specifically talking about, but there is a lot going on in the U.S., and I don’t know. I feel like whatever I say here is going to get put in a headline, and it’s going to get taken out of context. So, I’d really rather not do something that’s going to cause a big distraction for me in the middle of the tournament.

The question and Fritz’s reluctance to answer drew the attention of fans on social media, who criticized the reporter for asking political questions during an ongoing Grand Slam event. Here are some of the fans’ reactions on X:

Nonetheless, all aforementioned American players have booked their place in the third round of the Australian Open, except for Gauff, who is already in the fourth round. Gauff came from a set down to beat Hailey Baptiste 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 and will face Karolina Muchova on Sunday (January 25) in the round of 16.

Taylor Fritz doesn’t hope to follow in the footsteps of Stan Wawrinka

Taylor Fritz will face Stan Wawrinka in the third round of the Australian Open. It will be their fourth meeting on tour and first in almost three years. Wawrinka has been sensational at the tournament, winning back-to-back matches, and he became the oldest player (40 years old) to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in the past half a century.

Fritz was asked about his meeting against the Swiss legend and whether he will still be able to play professionally at 40. The American star noted that he’s excited about his clash against Wawrinka but pointed out that he doesn’t seem himself playing four years from now despite being 28:

I’m excited. I think it will be a fun match. Obviously, I’ve admired Stan for a long time. I know he’s playing very well, and it’s impressive the level and physical fitness he continues to maintain. Absolutely not, I can hardly imagine myself four years from now.

Fritz is the favorite to beat Wawrinka at the Australian Open. The former World No.4 is seeking to win his maiden Grand Slam at the tournament, having last reached a major final at the 2024 US Open.
