Liverpool returned to winning ways as they claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton in the Premier League. However, Reds’ forward Diogo Jota was at the center of controversy after being accused of ‘diving’ to gain a penalty for his side.
The Reds’ came off the back of a two-match winless run in all competitions. They lost 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup and drew 2-2 against city-rivals Everton. Following their recent victory over Wolves, Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table. They now remain on top of the table with 60 points from 25 matches, while Arsenal is second with 53 points.
It was quite an uphill task for the Reds to win against Vitor Pereira‘s side, who are currently battling relegation. Luis Diaz scored the opener for Liverpool in just the 15th minute of the match. Mohamed Salah made it 2-0 from the penalty spot, eight minutes before halftime. Matheus Cunha‘s long-range strike did give Wolves hope for a comeback, but Liverpool managed to hold on and secure a win.

Interestingly, viewers caught Reds’ forward Diogo Jota diving for a penalty in the 57th minute of the match. The Portuguese forward dropped to the ground after being apparently challenged by Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou. Referee Simon Hooper immediately pointed to the spot. However, he reversed his decision after VAR replays showed Jota had simply thrown himself to the floor.

Amidst the diving controversy, the 28-year-old forward managed to avoid a yellow card for his antics on the pitch. Nonetheless, Jota failed to open his account against the Wolves, as he now remains goalless in his last four appearances for the club.

Some fans went on to express dissatisfaction with the referee’s decision to not book Jota despite him being caught red-handed on the pitch-side monitor. A few others fumed that the forward was blatantly ‘cheating’. One fan hilariously claimed that there is no VAR during Liverpool matches. Another fan went on to state that Reds players are the best ‘divers’.
So many uneducated people in the replies 🤦♂️

Jota is a big time proven diver. I just remember his dive against Newcastle last season. Horrible player

Yep the “cheat at all costs” team and refs do nothing

Jota is a disgusting cheat

Worst is hooper actually gave the penalty. That shows the mindset of referees doing LFC games. They do everything to avoid comeback on them from PGMOL, pundits, sky and BBC. So reluctant to show cards espec reds. Just ignore blatant penalties, red cards etc. Corrupt and unfair

Moreover, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira was also left questioning referee Simon Hooper’s decisions throughout the match. He insisted that Ibrahima Konate should have been sent off for fouling Matheus Cunha twice in the first half.
