Jannik Sinner is guaranteed to climb to the top of the rankings next week due to Novak Djokovic‘s knee injury. As the Italian celebrated his first Roland Garros semifinal and the assured ranking with a social media post, netizens found it disrespectful that he did not mention the Serb anywhere.
Djokovic rocked the tennis world on Tuesday when he withdrew from the Roland Garros just a day before his quarterfinal clash with Norway’s Casper Ruud, who is set to face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic, during his fourth-round match against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, slipped several times on the court, and as a consequence of this, he aggravated his knee injury, which he said in the press conference wasn’t troubling him during his other matches. The MRI scan results confirmed that he had a meniscus tear. When Sinner was asked to comment on his assured No.1 spot and Djokovic’s injury, he wished the Serb a speedy recovery.
What can I say? First of all, it is every player's dream to become No. 1 in the world. In the other way, seeing Novak retiring here, I think, is disappointing. I wish him a speedy recovery.Jannik Sinner said after his quarterfinal match against Grigor Dimitrov
Then, about an hour after the announcement of Djokovic’s withdrawal from the tournament, Sinner shared the post.
A special day for me, my first Roland Garros semifinal, and to reach the ranking of world #1. Grateful for this moment, something we have worked very hard for, but the work doesn’t stop here, forza!!!Jannik Sinner wrote on X

Sinner would have eventually topped the rankings list if Djokovic suffered defeats in any one of the matches, for he had to defend 2000 points by reaching the final, given that he lifted his third Roland Garros trophy last year by beating Ruud in the summit clash.
Fans criticize Jannik Sinner for not mentioning Novak Djokovic in his post
As soon as Jannik Sinner shared the post, Novak Djokovic‘s supporters started criticizing him for not acknowledging what secured his position. Some fans slammed him for celebrating his No.1 ranking without waiting for the next week.

Check how they reacted:
Congrats Jannik, well deserved. Maybe a word of sympathy here towards Djokovic would have been classy and nice of you though.
— Pavvy G (@pavyg) June 4, 2024
I like you, but I understand you are now the establishment fave and have to play by their rules.
— Pavvy G (@pavyg) June 4, 2024
But you are not world no 1 till Monday and to tweet this just an hour after Djokovic pulls out with injury and therefore losing his No 1 spot with no mention of him is insensitive.
Congratulations on the #1, Jannik. You’ve been superb all year. ?
— ? Yolita? (@Yolitatennis) June 4, 2024
However, I’m sure this is not the way you would have chosen to get the #1, with the #1 player pulling out due to injury.?
That probably explains why wishing your colleague a speedy recovery slipped your mind.
Zero class Jannik, couldn’t you had wait to celebrate with the no.1 celebration…
— Paladin77 (@AL881977) June 4, 2024
Oh Jannik, I didn’t expect you would celebrate despite the injury of your rival
— Paladin77 (@AL881977) June 4, 2024
You’re still number 2 till Monday. This is disrespectful and rude! Apologize and wish Novak a speedy recovery if you have an ounce of decency left.
— Magdalena Max (@Magdalena_Max_) June 4, 2024
You’re not the number 1 yet. Wait until Monday. ??♂️
— Julio Cesar Rodriguez (@jcrmtxus) June 4, 2024
not one mention of Djokovic? the reason you are number 1…
— N (@Cfcnicco) June 4, 2024
No mention of taking the throne from the longest running no. 1 in history or wishing his speedy recovery? Thought you had more class than that or need a better scriptwriter.
— Scoop Malinowski (@scoopmalinowski) June 4, 2024
You deserve number one but lost me as a fan. Posting this the same day that Djokovic withdraws due to injury shows your lack of class.
— Z (@Akripan) June 4, 2024
I thought you were a classy guy…guess I was wrong. You should’ve at least wished Novak a speedy recovery. Poor form.

Sinner, who is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal, was World No.4 earlier this season but his maiden Grand Slam crown in Australia, his ATP Masters 1000 title in Miami, and multiple semifinal appearances took him to the No.2 spot. Djokovic, on the other hand, is trophyless this season and likely to miss Wimbledon after his knee surgery.
