Real Madrid secured a hard-fought victory against Getafe on Sunday. Amidst all the sheen and glory, Jude Bellingham’s penalty sparked a fresh air of controversy.

Just before the half-hour mark, Cameroonian defender Allan Nyom got entangled in a tackle with Antonio Rudiger and what followed thereafter left the fans questioning the call of VAR. The tussle between Allan Nyom and Rudiger started from the word go.

Nyom had his fair share of challenges, trying to contain Real Madrid’s assault, and had an early booking for arguing with the referee. However, in the case of the penalty, as the VAR showed, there was initial contact between Nyom and Rudiger. When the latter tipped over, there was hardly any substantial push from the Cameroonian.

After careful consideration, the referee decided that there was contact and it was enough to roughen up the German defender. A penalty ensued and Jude Bellingham hammered it home from the spot.

The opener galvanized Real Madrid into serious momentum and they were quick to latch onto it as eight minutes later, they found their second goal of the match. Bellingham’s defence-splitting pass made its way through to Kylian Mbappe and the Frenchman made no mistake in bagging the second for his team.

With this win, Los Blancos have 33 points from 14 games and find themselves in the second position. However, with one game in hand, they stand a chance of leapfrogging Barcelona into the top spot of the La Liga table.

Despite the controversy of the penalty, Real Madrid ensured that stayed focused to seal the win and walk away with all three points. They will be next up against Atheltic Club on December 5, hoping to gather those all-important three points that might get them ahead of Barcelona.
