Wild card Taylor Townsend will be playing her career’s singles final at the ATX Open. On Sunday (March 1), she will be up against countrywoman Peyton Stearns in what will also be an all-American final.
In her first singles semifinal, Townsend sent compatriot Ashlyn Krueger packing in straight sets. En route to the title clash, Townsend saved a match point against her first-round opponent, lucky loser Linda Fruhvirtova.
Then she came from a set down to defeat Rebeka Masarova in the quarterfinals. Townsend won her lone match against her final opponent, Stearns, when they clashed in the qualifying rounds of the 2022 Cincinnati Masters.
I’m creating a legacy for myself, and I’m doing it my way… You know, honestly, everyone that’s talked sh*t they gotta eat their words! I’m still standing, I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere. And it’s only just going to keep getting better from here, so I hope that they buckle up.
Taylor Townsend said during the on-court interview
Last year during the US Open, Townsend made a lot of headlines because of her row with Latvian ace Jelena Ostapenko. For not offering an apology due to a point off the net cord, Ostapenko lashed out, telling Townsend that she had “no class” and “no education”, with the remark being considered racist by many.
But Townsend found herself on the receiving end of criticism when she criticized Chinese cuisine while in Shenzhen to compete for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last year. This time, she was accused of racism.
Fans slam Taylor Townsend after her on-court interview
Following her on-court interview after reaching the ATX Open singles final, fans said instead of being ‘sour’, Taylor Townsend should have instead focused on the positive. Some fans said the 29-year-old played no top player, also reminding that the ATX Open is a WTA 250 event and not a Major.

Check out their reactions here:
Gets to her first final but still chooses to act sour…smh. She could have made it 100% positive.

Unlikeable til the end, massive chip on her shoulder.

Good doubles player though
Why is she not ignoring the people who don’t like her and concentrate on the people who have stood by her all this while. She still has a lot to learn.

She should be fined for using this type of language in an interview on court.

Tasteless and crude = Townsend. She is insufferable with the swearing and ghetto trash talking. True gutter stuff.

Townsend currently stands in 87th spot on the live rankings table in singles. If she wins on Sunday, she will remove Oksana Selekhmeteva from the 71st spot. Townsend achieved her career-best No.46 singles ranking in August 2024.

Today was actually a really, really tough day for me. It was really emotional because I had to send my son back home, so this morning there was a lot of water works on both sides. It was a really tough morning, honestly.
Taylor Townsend said after the match (H/T: WTA)
Townsend has so far clinched 11 doubles titles from 19 finals, including two Grand Slams ones at the 2024 Wimbledon and the 2025 Australian Open. The last time she won a doubles title was at the Japan Open, where she and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Hunter and Desirae Krawczyk.
I was actually really emotional, so I really tried to bring everything in, and I’m really proud of way I was able to keep calm and keep my emotions in check. Those type of things give me strength. I’m really proud I can continue, and the job’s not done yet.
Taylor Townsend added

Although she is a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Townsend has yet to reach the quarterfinals in Major singles, making the fourth round twice at her home Slam, the US Open, where last year she lost to Barbora Krejcikova.
