Yulia Putintseva is infamous for her fiery on-court reactions, as they often come across as controversial ones. On the first day of the Australian Open main draw, Putintseva once again made it clear that she is not someone who can tolerate anything against her.
On Sunday (January 18), Putintseva locked horns with former World No.10 Beatriz Haddad Maia. After losing the first set, Putintseva with difficulty saved herself from the brink of elimination but proved superior in the third set, booking the second-round spot with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 scoreline.
Moments after winning the last point of the match, Putintseva pulled off a strange celebration. She wriggled and screamed while walking toward the net for the customary handshake. The celebration did not stop there, as following the handshake with Maia and the chair umpire, she bowed twice before the Court 6 crowd and shouted something indiscernible.

Putintseva made headlines at the 2024 US Open for ignoring the ball kid who tossed the balls toward her. The 31-year-old later issued an apology for her conduct.
It was Putintseva’s career’s first win over the Brazilian ace in their third meeting. Prior to the Melbourne Slam, the World No.94 lost in the first round of the 2023 Wimbledon and the fourth round of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Open.
Maia, who now stands on the 59th spot in the rankings table, is a one-time Grand Slam semifinalist, reaching the stage at the 2023 French Open. At the Australian Open, she has yet to progress to the fourth round, with her best performance being two third-round appearances in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Last year in Majors, the 29-year-old produced her best when she reached the fourth round of the US Open.
Fans compare Yulia Putintseva’s celebration to Danielle Collins
Fans think Yulia Putintseva produced that curious celebration to shut up the loud Brazilian fans. Some fans compared her reaction to that of Danielle Collins in the tournament last year. Collins, after knocking out home favorite Destanee Aiava in the second round, cupped her ear, blew kisses, and slapped her back to hit back at the booing crowd.

Collins has pulled out of the first Major of the season because of a lingering back problem. The 32-year-old finished the 2022 Australian Open as the runner-up, losing to Ash Barty, and also made the semifinals here in 2019. She is covering the Australian Open as a commentator for the Tennis Channel.
Putintseva, on the other hand, has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in Grand Slam events, reaching the last eight thrice: at the 2016 and 2018 French Open, and the 2020 US Open. Last year in Melbourne, her run ended in the third round.
Putintseva will next be locking horns with Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot, who caused a huge upset by eliminating 20th seed Marta Kostyuk after a tight three-set battle. Putintseva met the 22-year-old in the first round of the 2023 Hamburg Open and defeated her in straight sets.
Jacquemot is playing the Australian Open main draw for the first time. But she made her Grand Slam main draw debut in her home Slam, the French Open, back in 2020. Her best Major performance came in last year’s French Open as she advanced to the third round, where compatriot Lois Boisson knocked her out in three sets.
The World No.60 has yet to clinch her career’s best singles title. Putintseva, a former World No.20, is a three-time singles titlist but hasn’t yet reached a championship match since defeating Ajla Tomljanovic in the 2024 Birmingham Classic. She has yet to add a Big Title to her trophy cabinet.
