FC Barcelona’s thrilling comeback win over Portuguese PL side Benfica in a recent Champions League encounter left fans spellbound. The Catalan giants came back from 4-2 down to secure an emphatic 5-4 victory at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz.
Barcelona have kept their unbeaten run going in the UEFA Champions League, as they remain second in the standings. Hansi Flick‘s side has been great this season, winning six out of their seven UCL matches. The club now has successfully made it to the knock-out stages of the competition with 18 points. Their recent victory over Benfica also comes off the back of a poor run in the Spanish league.
The La Liga giants won an epic nine-goal thriller over the Portuguese side. It was a dreadful start for the Catalan side, as Vangelis Pavlidis scored the opener for the home side. Barcelona equalized just 11 minutes later through Robert Lewandowski‘s penalty. Barca keeper Wojciech Szczesny‘s error allowed Benfica to take the lead once again before Pavlidis completed his hat-trick to make it 3-1.

In an eventful second half, Barcelona skipper Raphinha led the club to stage a superb fightback. Flick’s side refused to give up despite Benfica leading 4-2 until the 77th minute following Ronald Araujo‘s own goal. Lewandowski scored another spot-kick in the 78th minute, as the club went on a goal-scoring rampage. Eric Garcia and Raphinha’s extraordinary late goals helped Barca earn a hard-fought win.

Fans shared their reaction to the club’s victory on social media. Some fans labelled the match as ‘cinema’, while a few others referred to it as ‘football heritage’. Rival fans, however, questioned referee Danny Makkelie‘s decisions throughout the match, as Barca were awarded two penalties, which subsequently helped them in staging a comeback.

Nonetheless, Barcelona became only the second team to win a match in the Champions league after conceding four goals. The only other team to have achieved this feat is Borussia Dortmund, back in 2016, when they won 8-4 against Legia Warsaw.
