San Marino hadn’t won an away game in its history up until Monday. The ‘La Serenissima’ needed a win over Liechtenstein to secure promotion to UEFA Nations League tier C and they certainly did it in style.
The 3-1 victory marked San Marino’s first-ever three-goal game and away win. Additionally, all three of its victories have come against the same opposition. The result was even more special for the victors as they came from behind to secure promotion.
San Marino was trailing by a goal in the 40th minute when Aron Sele found the top right corner for Liechtenstein. It then turned things in the second half, with Lorenzo Lazzari‘s right-footed finish into the bottom right corner putting it on level terms.
In the 66th minute, Nicola Nanni put his side in front after confidently converting the penalty he won by firing into the bottom right corner. San Marino secured the win with a third goal in the 76th minute when Alessandro Golinucci did well to find the net from the center of the box.
